Bayly/Bayley or even Baily (General)

Greetings

I am researching my three toimes great grandfatheer Alfred Bayly/Bayley etc who was transported to Australia for stealing a horse or a house (the copy I have is particularly bad although we are pretty sure it was horse and who came to a tragic end. His convict record gives his natural place as Longhope and I foud his chirsitening record lsited for Mitcheldean givng his birth date as July 1808 having been "privately baptised" at Longhope previously. I ahve been reading the film of the original parish records and transcribing the Baylys I have come across and there seems to have been especially in the later years, a lot of them coming from the Hundred of St Briavels. This is suprising given the distances between the parishes. There is still some uncertainties however about his parentage what with the apparent marriages and remarriages.

1) Can anyone explain to me what "privately baptised" meant and
2) Is there anyone who is resaearching the same line as me.

If anyone is interested I can given them details of thier wayward cousins life.

Thank you and congratulations on a wonderful site
