Thanks to all for your replies. I'll tell you my story so far. My grandfather was named Frederick Thomas. Married in Rotherham, South Yorks 27th Dec 1891 to Emma Simpson at Rotherham Parish Church. Father's name on certificate given as James Thomas Occ. Carpenter. Fred's age on marriage cert. given as 23 years. Census returns in Rotherham give age 45 on 1911 return born Gloucester, age 33 on 1901 census born Gloucester.
The 1891 census shows him living in Nottingham Street, Rotherham with Henry and Mary Jane Clements, relationship given as boarder born Woolaston age 23 occ. coal miner. Mary Jane's place of birth given as Chepstow Monmouth. Mary Jane Clements was shown as witness on marriage certificate for Frederick and Emma.
Checked for Mary Jane's birth on FOD parish records which turned up Union workhouse Chepstow. Mon 28 Oct 1863. Mother given as Maria Thomas but no father.Mary Jane Thomas married Henry Clements 21st Dec 1879. Father given as James Thomas deceased occ. Soldier. 1881 census shows Mary Jane and Henry Clements in Rotherham with Mary Jane's age given as 19 years.
Checked BMD for Fred all quarters 5 years either side of 1868 without success. There was a likely candidate but he died age 2. Another Frederick born 10th May 1869 with James as father in East Dean was shown on 1901 census still in Westbury on Severn, ages matched. Frederick's birthday is unknown, he died before I was born and there is now no one alive who remembers his birth date as far as I know.
I was doing another search of FOD a couple of days ago when I turned up will for James Thomas occ Carpenter died 10 May 1877 with a Mary Jane as beneficiary. Next jobs to do are sending for birth cert. for Mary Jane and copy will for James. Is Mary Jane, Fred's sister or maybe aunt ?
Any ideas. Thanks again
