My interest in this discussion is that Mary Jane Thomas was my wife's g.grandmother. Some of the information here causes some difficulty. It is established that Jacob REEKS and Elizabeth PRICE had a daughter Maria and that she was born circa 1831. It is also established that she married a James THOMAS between Jan-Mar 1856. It is also thought that he was a soldier and died early 1860's. It has been assumed that Mary Jane THOMAS was their daughter - born in 1863 in the Union Workhouse, Chepstow. However there is now a record which shows Maria THOMAS (a widow) marrying a Charles WHITE in 1862. Therefore why do we have Maria THOMAS (nee REEKS) who is now WHITE giving birth to a Mary Jane THOMAS? Also the 1861 Census shows Jacob REEKS and Elizabeth with Maria THOMAS (age 31) Ellen THOMAS (age 6) and Albert THOMAS (age 3 months) all enumerated at the same address. It is interesting that neither Maria, Ellen or Albert are shown as having a relationship to Jacob but that could merely be the whim of the enumerator. I can find no other record of these children although with an infant of 3 months the assumtion has to be that he was Maria's son. I am becomming less convinced that this Maria REEKS is the mother of Mary Jane THOMAS. I have ordered a marriage certificate for Henry B Clements and Mary Jane and will let you know the outcome in due course.
