Also worth reading the Wikipaedia entry. I knew the rough outline of RM history, but had a look to see what it said.

Marines go back to 1664, and were under the army at some periods and under the Royal Navy at others. Under the Admiralty from 1755. Renamed Royal Marines in 1802. Renamed RMLI 1855 and Corps of Royal Marines in 1923.

One thing I didn't know, Lawrence Washington, half brother of George was an officer in the 43rd Foot (army numbering) which was a marine regiment in the 1741-1748 war. George's ambition was to be an officer in the British army. He was refused despite being a trusted unofficial aide to General Braddock, senior British general in North America at the start of the French Indian wars from 1754, soon to become part of the Seven Years War 1756-1763.
