Williams or Wintle? (General)

I know I am clutching at straws but I have this little niggle. For approx 30 years I have searched in vain for the baptism of my direct ancestor George Wintle. He was born around 1687/8 according to his age at death (43) inscribed on his tombstone in English Bicknor churchyard. Recently, while searching the parish registers on this wonderful site, I came across the baptism of a George Williams (bap 12 Feb 1687/8) at St Briavels. His father George married 19 May 1687 at St Briavels Elizabeth Morgan & they appear to have had 2 further children: Elizabeth in 1689/90 & William in 1695. There is also a George Williams bur 17 Feb 1729/30 at St Briavels which could refer to George Williams (senior).

However, considering the often poor condition of these early parish registers, is there any chance that the surname Williams has been mistaken for Wintle? I fully appreciate the sterling work of the transcribers of these parish registers (from transcribing old Wills myself I understand the difficulties of deciphering old documents so don't wish to appear ungrateful). But as I cannot view the original registers myself I just wanted to know if it was possible to have it confirmed that it was definitely Williams & not Wintle.

(I have ruled out the George Wintle bap 6 Jan 1691/2 at Mitcheldean as being my ancestor because from my researchers into the Will of his father another George Wintle (proved 1743) & marriage allegations etc it is evident that this was a completely different family).

Probably at the end of the day, I must just except that not all of my 'brick walls' will ever be solved - but the hope will always be there!
