It's a long shot, but for many years in the mid-20th century Frank and Marjorie Wintle were the Registrar and Deputy Registrar of BMD at Lydney. My grandfather knew Frank. Although I don't know them personally, there are still some Wintles in that area. So, Anthony, if you were to ask the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley Review to publish your enquiry, you might just find that a family of Registrars did some research that turned up a connection between your Wintle and themselves.
