Milo appears to be stray for 12 years between 1861 and your 1873 record.
Its possible he travelled to and from America , perhaps returning to encourage his family to cross the Atlantic (?).

Perhaps he was the Black sheep only because he choose to return to America and start a new family(?).

Much speculation !
