Lane End, West Dean ? (General)

I could be wrong but I think all the "Lane End"s are in the East Coleford area; my sister lives at the village of Coalway, it's on the old road that leaves the bigger "capital" town of Coleford and heads east towards Speech House then Cinderford. In bygone years Coalway was called Coalway Lane End, and was distintly separate from Coleford. However and much like Coalways nextdoor neighbour Broadwell, to all intents and purposes a modern map shows these villages are now more or less linked and are the outer suburbs of Coleford.
If you havent seen it the Old Maps website is truly excellent to see how the area evolves (and place names too) over time, it can be atricky site but once mastered is very rewarding, especially if like me you have a "thing" for old Ordnance Survey maps. This old thread should help you.

I think in terms of identifying which specific Lane End is mentioned, if its on a Census Return, hopefully reading the adjoining Census pages to find neighbouring places on the (walked) route of the official enumerator will guide you.

Must go, would love to chat more but laundry and supermarket (grrr) beckons...
