Hi Judy,
thanks for your helpful reply & kind words, yes this is a great website and a real Godsend to us all. I just wish my ramblings could have produced something more meaningful !. What a shame your father lived such a long life without knowing his full ancestry. Thanks for confirming about Adalena, a new name to me altho I wonder if it used to be quite a popular name albeit perhaps normally shortened to Ada or Lena, both far more wellknown of course.

Not much time tonight, sorry, but will try and post more tommorrow altho not sure what !?!. No doubt there are other forum members who will have better advice than mine to offer, no doubt you've already contacted Glos Council/ Hospital etc etc; I'm quite new to the whole FH subject in general and especially searching "recent" burials beyond what I posted last night.

So Adalena Marjorie Burgh(?Beryl) Newman (c/o your Ancestry Tree) was born abt 1909, and married Edward in 1930 aged 21. I cannot find her Birth on FreeBMD for sure unless she's rearranged her name ? Searching Ancestry 1911 Census this seems their preferred hit, is this her do you think ? Perhaps she favoured Adalena when adult after being called "Marj" as a child ? I presume her last name is difficult to transcribe, hence Burgh and not Beryl ? - why not Bertha after mother ??. Anyhow..

1911 Census: 16 South Avenue, South Twerton, Bath

Albert G Newman Head abt 1874 37 Male Married 6yrs Insurance Agent Widecombe, Somerset
Eva Maude Newman Wife abt 1882 Female Married 6yrs Hyde, Kent
Bertha Wynne Newman Daughter abt 1906 5 Female South Twerton, Bath, Somerset
Philip Sydney S Newman Son abt 1910 1 Male add South Twerton, Bath, Somerset Marjorie Adelina Newman Daughter abt 1910 1 Female South Twerton, Bath, Somerset
Sydney Newman Boarder abt 1882 29 Male Single Journeyman Plasterer Widecombe, Somerset
Adelaide Mary Newman Niece abt 1910 1 Female Single Widecombe, Somerset

So from FreeBMD:
Births Sep 1909
----------------
Newman Marjorie Adelina B. Bath 5c 458 elsie

Which fits very well, of course,
Altho I'm tempted to favour this one given the locality:
??

1911 Census: Church St, Little Dean, nr Newnham, Glosshire

Joseph Newman Head abt 1881 30 Male Married 2yrs Grocer Littledean, Gloucestershire
Beatrice Maud Newman Wife abt 1885 26 Female Married 2yrs Littledean, Gloucestershire
Marjorie Newman Daughter abt 1909 2 Female Littledean, Gloucestershire
Annie Bonsor Servant abt 1897 14 Female Single servant Cinderford, Gloucestershire

HOWEVER c/o GlosBMD I see this Marjorie marries Ralph Jones in 1936, so NOT her !.

Please can you confirm that Marjorie A.B. Newman from Bath is correct, thanks ?.
It may help us if we can research her life after Edward's death ?

Her parent's marriage:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Dec 1904
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Newman Albert George Bath 5c 1215
Stephens Eva Maude Bath 5c 1215

From FreeBMD I see Albert was born in Bath in 1874, and died there:

Deaths Mar 1951
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEWMAN Albert G 77 Bath 7c 38

As did wife Eva:

Deaths Jun 1961 (99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEWMAN Eva M 79 Bath 7c 23

DID ADALENA move "back" to Bath to be with her parents ?. Would she have planned for Edward to be buried there in a double plot ?
Or did she go to one of her sons ?

I confirm these Births to Edward & Lena:

Surname Given Name Mother District Volume Page Transcriber

Births Mar 1933
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phillips Timothy Newman Westbury S. 6a 357

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1936
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phillips James H. Newman Westbury S. 6a 434 Hoppy

(Is the H for Hubert after Edward's father, I wonder ?)

I've tried searching FreeBMD for a possible son's Marriage in a District also containing a possible Burial for Lena, but no luck...

You say Lena is in Stroud in 1946, is this their James' Marriage I wonder, he'd be aged 22, but where's the "H" ?
A long shot I guess..

Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry
PHILLIPS James BROWN Valerie Stroud Selsley All Saints 1958 C35/1 405

Similarly, PERHAPS ??:

Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry
PHILLIPS Timothy F HILL Janet M D Stroud Cranham St James 1959 C12/3 7

BUT All these names are quite common, recorded initials are odd = UNLIKELY,
But could Lena hence Edward be buried in Stroud ??

--------------------------

HOWEVER searching Ancestry for Lena I see it clearly suggests her death as:

England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2006
Name: Marjorie Adelena B Phillips
Birth: date
Death: dd mm 1984 - city, Berkshire, England

So bang goes the Stroud "theory", perhaps..... if you've not done so please can you obtain the full Death record from Ancestry, as I said I'm not a full member yet, thanks.

Hope this helps in some small way.
Atb til tomorrow, Jeff.
