Thomas Hawkins (General)
Dear Matt,
A couple of things really. Firstly, there were a lot of Thomas Hawkins about at the time, so it will be difficult to pin down the right one. As my Cousin Wendy (Dorset Dumpling) says, it could well be "our" Thomas, though at around the time he could have been elsewhere.
An examination of the life of "our" Thomas suggests that he only wore his trousers when going out. He most certainly has a track record for abandoning his kids, having abandoned one family in Wigan, and then another in Treherbert. Could he have abandoned Gertrude? I have no doubt that he was capable of doing so.
