If Thomas never got around to tying the knot with Hannah I believe he would have to be there when the birth was registered, just like today, maybe that is why his name was ruled through.

My Grandfather on my mothers side was illegitimate and had 3 Christian names, 2 sounding very much like surnames, one of which was Dobel, on the 1891 census just around the corner from where my Great Grandmother lived was a family with the surname Dobel!! Also sometimes when you see a surname as a Christian name it is the mother or either grandmothers maiden name. Hope that helps
