Ref Thomas Collins born Bristol c1850.
trying to add to Slowhands' earlier work, but too many possibles to choose from - which is no doubt why Slowhands didn't commit !

FamilySearch shows a few different Thos Collins born England c1850 but in USA at time of their 1880 Census. Some are with their families, but this looks like our man, as Slowhands indicated;

This one page of the Census shows almost all those listed are single men, mostly miners like Thomas, and many from overseas including the UK and Europe.

It appears that at this time Railroad, Elko was something of a new "boom town".

"Elko lies along the route of the historic California Trail, it was first inhabited only in 1868, when it was at the east end of the railroad tracks built by the Central Pacific Railroad (the portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad built from California to Utah). When the railroad crews moved on, Elko remained, serving as a center for ranching, mining, rail freight and general supplies."
