Thanks MPG for reminding me that he gave this specific information abt his birth and religion. Sorry for losing focus of this, think my mind was overwhelmed by my searches seeing several pointers to him possibly being Irish, perhaps due to my using an American database which may be biased in this respect?.

I've just searched for Adelaide and then Edith under the hope they were his mother or aunt and so born between 1800 and 1840, and at one time living in Bristol area. To my surprise I found Adelaide a more common name hence "fit" than Edith, this one particularly;

There are only a couple of Chas Nichols in the FoD PRs.

Angelina Nichols is not such a rare name in the BMD records as I first assumed.
