In WW1 some of the Australian Troops wore Flat Caps (similar to an officers cap) as well as there more well known Slouch Hat.
In the photograph, is the cap badge visible ? and are any shoulder patches on the sleeves of his uniform visible ?
Also, a lot of the soldiers photographs were printed in newspapers in special editions.
The location of the photograph being in Perth could be because stroop hips often waited in Western Australia, sometimes at Albany, until sufficient ships and Naval forces could be marshalled to form a convoy to proceed overseas.
